Music icon Elton John opened up about revisiting his early career highlights during a recent interview, revealing a mix of surprise and nostalgia while rewatching archival footage and listening to vintage recordings. The 77-year-old legend, known for hits like Rocket Man and Your Song, shared insights on BBC Radio 2’s Scott Mills Breakfast Show alongside collaborator Brandi Carlile, ahead of their joint album Who Believes in Angels?
Rediscovering 1970s Magic
John admitted he rarely listens to his past work but was compelled to do so while approving a newly remastered live album from his 1977 Rainbow Theatre performance with percussionist Ray Cooper. “I wouldn’t go and put my old music on,” he said, adding, “But when I had to listen to that [live album], I was astounded by how great it was. It was amazing!”
The project coincides with his involvement in the 2024 documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, which required him to rewatch classic performances. “It just brought back so many memories,” he said, highlighting his prolific output from 1970–1975: “We made 13 albums, plus singles and B-sides, while touring nonstop. The momentum was incredible.”
Aversion to Self-Reflection
Despite his pride in past achievements, John confessed discomfort with self-observation. “I never watch anything about me because I don’t like looking at myself very often,” he noted. “I’m not one to bask in my success.” His focus remains forward-looking, as evidenced by his collaboration with Carlile on Who Believes in Angels?, set for a spring 2025 release.
Fan and Industry Reaction
The interview sparked social media buzz, with fans praising John’s candidness and expressing excitement for the documentary and album. Critics noted his ability to balance humility with acknowledgment of his legacy, calling it a “refreshing take on artistic reflection.”
