CNN anchor Don Lemon responded to Kanye West’s (Ye) inflammatory remarks following the rapper’s provocative appearance at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where his wife Bianca Censori wore a nearly transparent outfit. Lemon clarified his role in reporting rumors about the couple’s alleged removal from the event and condemned Ye’s use of a racially charged slur.
Lemon’s Statement:
Lemon, 58, addressed Ye’s accusations during a Thursday interview, stating, “He called me [a slur]… I was like, ‘C’mon man, we’re both Black men. You know what that word means in our community. Have some respect.’” The slur, a derogatory term for a Black person perceived as subservient to white authority, has sparked backlash against Ye.
Grammy Stunt Context:
Ye and Censori arrived at the Grammys red carpet on Sunday, with Censori wearing a sheer dress reminiscent of Ye’s Vultures album cover. The outfit drew widespread attention, with Lemon calling the stunt “surprising but not surprising,” noting Ye’s history as a “master marketer.”
Lemon’s Clarification:
Lemon clarified he shared rumors about the couple being “escorted out” of the ceremony after hearing them in industry circles, not to fuel speculation. He also recounted a prior encounter with Ye: “When I tried to interview him, he said, ‘I’m trying to focus. No interviews.’”
Ye’s Response:
Ye later accused Lemon of fabricating the removal story, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “Don Lemon started the rumor that me and my wife got kicked out.” Ye also defended his red carpet choice, stating, “I HAVE DOMINION OVER MY WIFE. THIS AIN’T NO WOKE FEMINIST S***.”
Public Reaction:
Critics condemned Ye’s use of the slur, while others defended Lemon’s right to report rumors. The Grammy Awards confirmed the couple was not removed from the event .
